thick.
Interesting thing about the small
steak was that it \ vas not the top-
rated steak on the menu ... Although
small, it was not the cheapest.
HE WAS ONE OF Detroit's most
popular restaurant men ... earning
that acclaim by serving good food
for about 50 years, give or take a
few, and noted as a nice guy ... To
thousands of Detroiters, New
Yorkers, Chicagoans, etc., Hazen
Camp was better known as Red
Kemp.
Back around 1914, gentle, soft-
spoken Red Kemp was the terror of
America's dirt and board motorcycle
tracks ... In fact, it was in 1914 that .
Red won the world championship of
motorcycle riding ... To capitalize on
his fame, Red opened a hot dog
wagon at the corner of East Jefferson
and Conner.
Within a few years, he had built
his wagon into a restaurant and bar
at the corner of Chene and East
Jefferson ... It was here, as Red
Kemp's, that Red build a great repu-
tation with a steak and chophouse.
All through prohibition, Red
Kemp's flourished as one of the East
Side's best restaurant-bars.
During World War II, Red served
servicemen breakfast, lunch and din-
ner for 25 cents as his contribution
to the war effort.
When the war ended, he built a
new place on E. Jefferson, just up
the street from his old spot.
WHEN MANY PEOPLE were in
the mood for french-fried shrimp,
they would head for a place whose
name they couldn't pronounce, but
sure loved its food.
This was the specialty of the house
at Ciungan's (pronounced Chin-
gun's) on Southfield Road in Ecorse
... which eliminated the bread
crumbs and called for a "quick dip
in a light batter" ... and then a
plunge into the deep fryer.
The secret batter recipe was a cor-
nerstone for many years.
It also specialized in oysters
Rockefeller and lobster thermador.
There were two lobster tanks at
Ciungan's -- and those who liked
shrimp, but not the french-fried, could
get it five other ways ... shrimp Creole,
Newburg, saute, boiled and cold ... All
were excellent.
CUSTOMERS KNEW IT only as
Anatole's ... But the full name was
Anatole's Sous Les Erodes, which meant
Anatole's Under the Stars ... and allud-
ed to the twinkling lights set in the
ceiling to simulate the sky at night.
