funding through family, friends, dona-

Her productions included

work, Newman returned to L.A.,
where she encountered her big break.
A Big Break
"1 had spent summers in L.A. since
my parents moved there, and I made
friends and connections," she says. "One
summer I interned with Debra Zane, a
well-known casting agent who worked
on 7i-aftic, American Beauty, Men In
Black and The Legend of Baggard Vance.
"One day she called and asked if I
could- be on the set of the Drew Carey
Show at 6 a.m. in the morning. Her sis-
ter cast the show, and they needed
someone to be on the set for a small
part. I did it, got an agent and immedi-

During the summers, Newman
attended camp at Interlochen,
where she studied Shakespeare
and musical theater. "I went
for four years, beginning at
age 13," she says. "I did about
10 plays, including Henry V."
After her 1996 Cranbrook
graduation, Newman attended
the Boston University School
of Fine Arts Acting
Conservatory for two years,
but transferred to
Northwestern University in
Evanston, Ill., to broaden her
horizons.
