Temple Dedicates
Historical Marker
On Sunday, Oct. 7, Temple Beth El will
dedicate a Michigan historical marker
commemorating the 150th anniversary
of the founding of the congregation.
This will be the third marker attesting
to Temple Beth El's role in the founda-
tion of the Detroit Jewish Community.
The first, dedicated in 1973, is on
East Lafayette in Detroit and commem-
orates the Lafayette Street cemetery,
Michigan's oldest Jewish cemetery, dedi-
cated in 1851. The cemetery, which
adjoins Elmwood Cemetery, contains
the graves of Jewish veterans of the
Spanish-American War and World War

The second marker, dedicated in
1977 at the corner of St. Antoine and
Congress, commemorates the site of the
first Jewish religious services in
Michigan. The site was the home of
Isaac and Sarah Couzens, who arrived
in Detroit in 1850 at a time when the
Jewish population numbered 60. The
Couzens held the first minyan in their
home and later hosted the gathering of
12 families who met to form the Beth
El Society.
The marker being dedicated Oct. 7
commemorates the founding of the
congregation and notes its embrace of
Reform Judaism as well as Beth El's role
in helping to charter the Union of
American Hebrew Congregations.
A representative of the Michigan
Historical Commission will be among
