the poisonous gas murdered so
many people.
The barracks were also intact. We
were able to see firsthand the inhu-
mane living conditions. Three peo-
ple, sometimes up to five, were
forced to share a small, hard bed. I
saw rows of toilets where people
were stripped of privacy and dignity.
I left Majdanek with a renewed
respect for the unbelievable strength
of the survivors of these camps.
It was very disturbing to me to
see ashes and remains still in the
ovens. I was shocked time and again
by the inhumanity. It was very dis-
comforting to see how close the
cities were located in relation to the
camps, and yet all sat silent. We vis-
ited mass graves, and we said
Kaddish for all of those who had
perished.
During my nine days in Poland, I
learned firsthand the atrocities of
the Holocaust and can truly under-
stand how important it is for all
Jews to always remember, and to
support our State of Israel so this
can never happen again.
After much sadness, flying to
Israel was a breath of fresh air. As
soon as we landed in Tel Aviv, we
could feel the intense vibrancy of
life. We finally felt as if we had
arrived home.
This was my third time in Israel,
and I could sense the changes that
have occurred due to the dangers
the Palestinian terrorists have creat-
ed. We could not roam the streets
with the same freedom that I had
experienced in the past. However, I
always felt very safe.
Israeli hospitality could not have
been stronger; their appreciation for
our presence in Israel was felt. We
had wonderful experiences visiting
the Kotel (Western Wall), climbing
Masada, rapelling mountain walls
and hiking in the Negev.
After five weeks of travel, I arrived
back in Michigan a different indi-
vidual, one who continues to have a
strong Jewish identity, but also a
much greater appreciation for all of
our struggles, past and present. I
feel privileged.
