an increase of nearly 10 per-
cent over last year's opening
day enrollment of 244.
Marc Jerusalem, president of
the Southfield-based school,
said Akiva added 65 new stu-
dents to its roster, although 42
were lost for various reasons.
Of those who left, 12 gradu-
ated, about 15 moved from
the Detroit area, four trans-
ferred to out-of-town yeshivot
and about five were asked not
to return, Jerusalem said.
The remaining half dozen
transferred to other schools in
the Detroit area "but we had
more transfer in from those
schools than we lost,
Jerusalem said.
The Southfield-based mod-
ern Orthodox school gained
27 new families, bringing in
some 48 new students. The
other new students are sisters
and brothers of those already
enrolled.
Because of much higher
enrollment in the nursery
grades, Akiva is offering three
nursery sections, one each for
children 21/2, 3 and 4 years
old. 0
