or several, sunny August
days, children served by
Jewish Association for
Residential Care's Harris
Division, along with their siblings and
friends, enjoyed a summer camping
experience sponsored by the Bear
Hug Foundation.
Bear Hug, a nonprofit foundation
established in 2000 and based in
Birmingham, provides experiential
outdoor educational programs for
children with special needs. The pro-
gram sent JARC children, their sib-
lings and friends to Camp Tanuga on
Manistee Lake in Kalkaska. Bear Hug
provided a "shadow" for every child,
enabling them to enjoy and partici-
pate in adventure.
"The experience was vigorous,
exciting and tons of fun," said JARC's
Randee Klein, who camped with the
kids. "This was our first year to par-
ticipate, and families are already call-
ing to sign up for next summer. It
truly was a very positive adventure for
everyone."
Naomi Behrmann, whose daugh-
ters Mindy and Tilly attended camp,
remarked, "Mindy had so much fun
in three days that she wants to go for
three weeks next year."

2. Lauren
Ettinger, 14, of
Farmington Hills.

Camp Tanuga and the Bear Hug
Foundation custom-designed an envi-
ronment that was safe, friendly and
responsive to the individual needs of
JARC kids. Activities included swim-
ming, hiking, kayaking, boating,
archery, arts and crafts, a hayride, and
s'mores and camp songs around an
evening campfire.
"Man, I went on a kayak!" said
Noah Sriro, a JARC camper.
Jenny Kellman Fritz of the Bear
Hug Foundation said, "The JARC
campers had such a great time that
news spread to other organizations.
We were thrilled to be able to provide
such a valuable experience for JARC,
and can't wait to do it again for oth-
,,
ers.

3. Ethan Grier,
6, of West
Bloomfield (sister
of Molly Grier,
another JARC
camper).

4. Lisa Grenda,
19, of Oak Park
with Jay Hodess,
8, of West
Bloomfield.

5. Brothers
Nathan Sriro,
and Noah. Sriro,
10, of West
Bloomfield on the
sandy shores of
Manistee Lake at
Camp Tanuga.
