Detroit Country Day School on Sept. 5.
Carl Reiner — actor, comedian,

comedy writer and first-class raconteur
— appeared at a benefit for the
Detroit Friends of Bar-Ilan University.
About 600 tickets were sold, and
enough ads to fill a hefty playbill.
Event co-chairpersons were Rochelle
Lieberman and Eli Scherr; Jeff Sakwa
was playbill chair; and Karen Alpiner
and Debbie Muskovitz handled event
arrangements.
"The people I've talked to said they
had a wonderful time," said Barbara
Horowitz, outgoing president of the
Detroit Friends.
"Many people," she said, "used the
word mentsh" in reference to Reiner. ❑

Beth Shalom
Gears For Kids

Congregation Beth Shalom will have
family holiday observances for Yom
Kippur and Sukkot.
New this year will be a Yom Kippur
family service, 10:15 a.m.-noon
Thursday, Sept. 27, at Avery Elementary

School in Oak Park. Written and con-
ducted by congregants and geared
toward families with children from birth

though age 11, the service follows a half-
hour of games that teach children about
Yom Kippur. The program also includes
the Shofar Blowout.
A children's Neila (concluding prayer)
program and Shofar Blowout will take
place at 7:15 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, in
Beth Shalom's education center. The chil-

dren's program is a half-hour of fun and
learning about Yom Kippur for children in
preschool through fifth grade. The Shofar
Blowout will follow at about 7:45 p.m.
The congregation will have a familiy
Sukkot program, "Pizza (and Pasta) in a
Hut," 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, in the
synagogue. The program will include
dinner, music, games and sukkah-deco-
rating crafts and an edible sukkah to
make for dessert. Prepayment and regis-
tration by Sept. 24 is required.
