The writing of the Meer Torah was
completed at Congregation Dovid Ben
Nuchim in Oak Park, with Rabbi
Yaacov Aaron Amzalak, son-in-law of
Aharon and Phyllis Meer, and Rabbi
Levi Kagan, son of the late Detroit
Chabad leader Rabbi Yitzhak Kagan,
as scribes. After the writing ceremony,
the Torah was dressed in its velvet
cover and silver crown, special prayers
were recited and joyous dancing with
the Torah began.
As the Torah was escorted out of
Dovid Ben Nuchim to begin the half-
mile parade to its new abode at the Bais
Chahad, the rain suddenly stopped and
the sun came out to grace the event.
"The timing was like a miracle," mar-
veled participant Chaim Roerter of Oak
Park. "The Torah is a gift from God,
and the sunshine was the gift wrap."
The entourage wound its way
through the neighborhood to the Jewish
Community Center, where the Bais
Chabad is located, dancing before the
Torah scroll, which was carried under a
chuppah (Jewish wedding canopy).
Many neighbors came out to watch,
attracted by the lively procession.
"This is very heimish, very nice,"
said resident Shirley Kramer, smiling
and clapping to the music.
"This is a peak moment in the life of
our shul," said parade participant
Nacha Leaf. She and husband Avraham
are founding members of the 11-year-
old Bais Chahad, which has an average
Shabbat attendance of about 120.
