Meer family donates new
scroll to Bais Chabad
of North Oak Park/FREE.

A

SUSAN TAWIL

Special to the Jewish News

new Sefer Torah (Torah scroll) was completed
Sept. 9 in Oak Park, brightening a day of nearly
nonstop rain.
The scroll was donated to the Bais Chabad of
North Oak Park in memory of Norma Jean Meer by mem-
bers of the Meer family: Edward and Gloria Meer of
Bloomfield Hills, Reuven and Shani Meer of Oak Park, Dr.
Aharon and Phyllis Meer of Oak Park and Brian and Lisa
i\ 4 °'" 4 West Bloomfield.
The Torah scroll, written in Israel over the past year, was
brought to Detroit with the last 100 letters blank. At a
hachnasat Sefer Torah (Torah dedication), it is traditional for
friends, family and synagogue members to complete the final
letters of the scroll. The last mitzvah enumerated in the Torah
is that of writing a Sefer Torah, and the writing of even a let-
ter in an authentic scroll fulfills this commandment.
The honor is usually purchased, with proceeds going to ben-
efit the shul. The letters, left in outline, are filled in by indi-
viduals using a quill and special ink, with a sofer (scribe) on
