Debacle In Durban

United Nations conference in Durban, South Africa, that was supposed to address prob-
lems of racism around the world degenerated instead into a session of bashing Israel as a
"racist, apartheid nation." The U.S. and Israel walked out of the conference in protest,
leaving delegates saying they wanted to work out a compromise, but unable to agree to anything
that was acceptable to the unyielding Arab states. For an account of the meeting and its conse-
quences in Israel and America, please see our special report "Debacle In Durban," which begins
on page 18.
