Central Higt:
Happy Days Again
The women of Detroit's Central High School Class of
1954 no longer gossip about who has the hottest date on
Saturday night. Their most recent topic of discussion: Who
has the oldest grandchild?
The second Tuesday of every other
month, the Central High School
Reunion Ladies Dinner Club meets for
dinner and to catch up on each other's
lives. Usually, 15-20 women from the
class attend.
In 1994, some of the women began
meeting for dinner while planning their
40-year class reunion. Although they all
had known each other in high school,
JAMIE
they formed a new bond and decided to
ROSEN
continue meeting
College Intern
after the event.
With the death of
classmate Mary Lou (Feldstein)
Berman in 1995, they pledged to meet
every other month.
We started to have so much fun.
New friends have been made and old
relationships have been rekindled. At
age 60, you think that your life is set-
tled — this adds some variety," says
Vivian Zabel of
Vivian Zabel of Southfield, who organ-
Southfield
izes the dinners.
After each dinner, the group chooses
their next meeting place and Zabel
makes a reservation. Ten days prior to the date, she calls all
available women in the class and encourages them to
attend whenever possible.
"It's an anchor to a sweet past," says group member
Donna Sklar of Farmington Hills. "These are women I
hadn't seen since high school. It's nice to know that the
people we went to high school with are now in the same
place. It's just a sweet evening."
