watt smile and attention to detail,
much like now owner Dean Hachem
does in the suburbs.
IN A SEMI-rowdy atmosphere
(alive with camaraderie at the tables
surrounding the large center bar
area), Porter Street Station on Porter,
had actual rolling stock railroad
signs and switches, Tiffany lamps,
and a train bell that rang at cocktail
time signaling special drink prices ...
Also an authentic boxcar that was
added for parties and banquets.
OLD CUSTOMERS (and their
children and grandchildren) returned
frequently for the "real thing" at
Zosia's, considered then as the
Queen of Polish restaurants ... If you
didn't let the exterior put you off,
there was some wonderful Polish
food to be had, served by some very
nice ladies.
HARD TO FIND AND impossi-
ble to get into without calling a
week or so ahead, Benno's on Agnes,
was in a class of its own ... The
reservation was necessary even if the
place was empty! ... An unmarked
door was locked and a bell sum-
moned a waiter who looked over
prospective customers with the eye
of a speakeasy doorman ... The has-
sle was worth it, once inside ... They
served only 40 dinners a night ...
each prepared with care ... Here, in
this cool green and white room,
pheasant and beef Wellington were
available ... Sounds snobbish, but it
wasn't ... just very good.
AS A REAL CAFE, straight out of
New York's onetime fashionable
Soho district, Cafe Harmonie on
Randolph, was complete with patio
furniture and light gourmet offerings
to nibble on while listening to music
... In addition to the musical enter-
tainment, ranging from bluegrass to
jazz, you could see a full line of orig-
inal photographs and artwork on
display all around the second floor
balcony ... This was a great place to
take in some fun music in a totally
relaxed come-as-you-are setting.
PERHAPS REPRESENTING
Detroit as the Motor City better
than any other restaurant, Jim's
Garage on West Larned, across from
Cobo Hall, had a collection of crys-
tal prototypes for radiator caps that
qualified as museum pieces.
There was a vast collection of
auto-related memorabilia from
antique cars to chamois tablecloths
... As would be expected, most of
the entrees were named after auto-
mobiles from America, Italy,
England and France. D
