Suicide Bomber
Hits Checkpoint

Jerusalem/JTA — A Palestinian sui-
cide bomber blew himself up at an
Israeli military checkpoint in the
Jordan Valley of the West Bank.
The Palestinian detonated a bomb
Wednesday when a soldier
approached to inspect his car, Israeli
security sources said. The soldier was
slightly hurt after being hit in the leg
by shrapnel. It was not clear whether
the Palestinian meant to detonate the
bomb at the checkpoint or had
intended to explode it among more
Israelis.

Melatonin Can Lead
To Dysfunction

Jerusalem/JTA — Researchers at the
Technion-Israel Institute of
Technology in Haifa have found that
the hormone melatonin, sometimes
used to beat jet lag, can impair sperm
quality.
A study found that men with sexual
dysfunction have a high level of mela-
tonin in their bodies.

Report: Women
Join Suicide Teams

Jerusalem/JTA — Dozens of
Palestinian women are responding to
a decree issued by Saudi Arabia's
High Islamic Council to become sui-
cide bombers, according to the

Sunday Times of London.

The report of last week's decree
comes after a 23-year-old mother of
two was arrested with explosives at
Tel Aviv's Central Bus Station last
Friday.
Some Islamic officials reportedly
had opposed allowing women to
become suicide bombers, but
changed their minds after an Israeli
attack last week that killed eight
Palestinians, including top members
of Hamas.

Draftees Won't Serve
With Women

Jerusalem/JTA
Some 100
Orthodox draftees signed a petition
saying they will not serve in the Israel
Defense Force alongside women.
Leftist politicians lashed out at rab-
bis backing the move, charging they

are trying to use religious coercion at a
time when the Israel Defense Force is
trying to achieve sexual equality.
The controversy erupted after
Israeli military officials dissolved the
Women's Corps and merged it into
the General Staff — a move aimed
at eliminating gender discrimination
in the IDF.

Jerusalem.
The First Nuremberg Haggadah,
written and illustrated in Germany in
1449 by a man known as Joel ben
Simeon, was purchased by New York

Hadassah Urges
Organ Donation

Jerusalem/JTA — Hadassah, the
Women's Zionist Organization of
America, organized a demonstration
last week in Jerusalem to urge
Israelis to donate organs for trans-
plant.
According to the Israel Association
for Transplants, Israel has among the
lowest rates of organ donation in the
Westein world. In a show of solidar-
ity with Israel, Hadassah held its
annual convention in Jerusalem.
At the opening Monday night,
Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and the
U.S. ambassador to Israel, Daniel
Kurtzer, addressed the 550 Hadassah
delegates.

Forward Station

To Air Sports Talk

New York/JTA — A New York radio
station that once had programming
in Yiddish as well as Hebrew, Greek,
Korean, Polish and other languages
will change its format to sports talk.
The Forward Association, which
owns WEVD-AM, said it may sell
the radio station at some point and is
making the move to sustain the
group's newspaper operations.
