Suicide Bomber Hits Checkpoint Jerusalem/JTA — A Palestinian sui- cide bomber blew himself up at an Israeli military checkpoint in the Jordan Valley of the West Bank. The Palestinian detonated a bomb Wednesday when a soldier approached to inspect his car, Israeli security sources said. The soldier was slightly hurt after being hit in the leg by shrapnel. It was not clear whether the Palestinian meant to detonate the bomb at the checkpoint or had intended to explode it among more Israelis. Report: Women Join Suicide Teams Jerusalem/JTA — Dozens of Palestinian women are responding to a decree issued by Saudi Arabia's High Islamic Council to become sui- cide bombers, according to the Sunday Times of London. The report of last week's decree comes after a 23-year-old mother of two was arrested with explosives at Tel Aviv's Central Bus Station last Friday. Some Islamic officials reportedly had opposed allowing women to become suicide bombers, but changed their minds after an Israeli attack last week that killed eight Palestinians, including top members of Hamas. Draftees Won't Serve With Women Jerusalem/JTA Some 100 Orthodox draftees signed a petition saying they will not serve in the Israel Defense Force alongside women. Leftist politicians lashed out at rab- bis backing the move, charging they are trying to use religious coercion at a time when the Israel Defense Force is trying to achieve sexual equality. Israel Receives Historic Haggadah CCWM Jerusalem/JTA — A 15th-century Haggadah bought in April for more than 51 million was donated last Friday to the Israel Museum in Jerusalem. The First Nuremberg Haggadah, written and illustrated in Germany in 1449 by a man known as Joel ben Simeon, was purchased by New York collector Erica Jesselson at a Sotheby's auction in Tel Aviv. "This Haggadah is a patrimonial treasure, like the Mona Lisa," said James Snyder, director of the Israel Museum. According to the Israel Association for Transplants, Israel has among the lowest rates of organ donation in the Westein world. In a show of solidar- ity with Israel, Hadassah held its annual convention in Jerusalem.
