are normally discouraged from ordering
meals off the dinner menu ... The sushi
bar proper is the domain of those who
want to eat sushi, a la carte.
There were three of us enjoying the
fare at Sapporo ... and thoroughly enjoy-
ing the goodness of its beautiful presen-
rations that came to our table ...
Japanese sushi rolls served in a lacquered
wooden tray with gold inlay ... absolute-
ly delicious ... Tempuras, sashimi, noo-
dle dishes, very rare beef tataki, crab
meat shumai, etc.
You don't have to eat raw fish to enjoy
the sushi experience ... Among the many
choices available are numerous fish vari-
eties that are served broiled, smoked or
slightly steamed or marinated ... If you
want to avoid raw fish altogether, this is
where good Japanese sushi chefs like
those at Sapporo come in ... Just tell
them ahead of time ... There are vegetar-
ian sushi aficionados who get by quire
well with various pickled, egg and veg-
etable rolls and side dishes ... I don't
know of any sushi in this country that
has meat in it.
Tuna roll, with raw tuna in a roll of
rice and seaweed is all the raw fish some
people will eat ... They are missing
something ... Smoked salmon is really
lox ... Better to try the raw salmon ...
Many people like fancy sushi rolls,
where the fish is rolled up in rice and
seaweed along with vegetables and vari-
ous other flavors ... A favorite of numer-
ous folks is the California roll with avo-
cado, crab, cream cheese, etc. wrapped
in rice and seaweed.
Like I said, most sushi bars here are
also Japanese restaurants ... So it is
with Sapporo ... Other than sushi, at
lunch or dinner you may want the
broiled chicken teriyaki or vegetable or
sweet potato tempura ... or beef teriya-
ki (broiled beef) etc. ... Dinner has
sukiyaki (thin sliced beef and vegeta-
bles) in sukiyaki sauce, or shabu shabu
with the sliced beef in a broth, or
slices of duck and vegetables in broth
... among so many wonderfully pre-
pared dishes of extreme elegance with
joyous tastes all their very own.
Have you ever had miso soup? ... If
not, you might want to try it at
Sapporo ... This delicious soup is
served every morning in Japan, with
the flavors of seasonal vegetables ... At
Sapporo, we had it with cubes of tofu
and it was excellent ... Almost any veg-
etable can be enjoyed in the soup,
from lettuce to pea pods ... Vegetables
with strong flavors, like green pepper
or celery, are not recommended.
Hours are seven days ... Monday-
Saturday lunch is 11:30-2 ... Then it
closes ... and reopens for dinner, 5:30-
