Synagogue Earns
Grant For Retreat

Congregation Ahavat Shalom of
Traverse City, led by Rabbi Stacie
Fine, has received a $60,000 grant
from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation
to plan and pilot a Jewish retreat
center in northern Michigan.
The center will help meet the
spiritual needs of those interested in
contemporary Jewish practice, phi-
losophy and spirituality.
Says Rabbi Fine, "We are creating
a new Jewish retreat center with a
focus on an inclusive, contemporary
Judaism in the beauty of northern
Michigan. We are pleased to offer
the Jewish and general community
this opportunity to learn with top
flight leaders and to enjoy the fruits
of Jewish spiritual renewal."
Working with successful models
across the country, the Ahavat
Shalom Retreat Center piloted its
first program in May 2001; it will
offer a weekend retreat in October
2001. The retreat center will offer
weekend and weeklong programs
with rabbis and Jewish thinkers,
educators, artists and leaders.
The programs are geared for
Jewish and intercultural adults, cou-
ples, and families interested in
deepening spiritual practice in med-
itation, text study and the arts. The
center will serve as a place for Jews
to come together who seek to trans-
late contemporary Jewish thinking
and practice into their lives and
communities.
The October retreat will feature
author and speaker Dr. Avram
Davis, who founded Chochmat
HaLey, an independent Jewish med-
itation center in Berkeley, Calif.
The author of four books is best
known for his work in introducing
Jewish meditation from a mystical
perspective.
