Congregation B'nai Moshe's summer-
long musical Kabbalat Shabbat series
"2001-A Shabbat Odyssey" will con-
tinue every Friday night in July from
5:45 to 7 p.m. with the following
schedule of special weekly themes:
• Friday, July 6: "Bring Your Own
Musical Instrument." Additional
musical instruments will be available
that night for participants to use.
• Friday, July 13: "BYOB — Bring
Your Own Blanket" outdoor service,
weather permitting (in event of rain,
the service will take place in the syna-
gogue's west foyer). Participants are
encouraged to bring blankets and
lawn chairs.
• Friday, July 20: "Kid Challenge"
seeks to top the previous record of 38
school-age children present.
• Friday, July 27: All with July birth-
days will be honored as part of the
Shabbat Odyssey service.
Boxed kosher Shabbat suppers are
available from Sperbers Kosher
Catering by pre-paid order by
Wednesday each week. Several menu
choices are offered. Menu information
is available from the synagogue office.
Call (248) 788-0600.
"Shabbat Odyssey" co-chairs Debi
King and Alisa Perskin-Shepherd also
announced this week that the shul has
produced a music CD, "2001 — A
Shabbat Odyssey — Live at
Congregation B'nai Moshe" featuring
Cantor Earl G. Berris and Shabbat

Odyssey participants. The CD was
recorded live at a June Shabbat
Odyssey service and is available at a
cost of $18 a copy. The Shabbat
Odyssey Kabbalat Shabbat service fea-
tures nzggunim (wordless Chasidic
melodies) plus liturgical texts set to
music composed by contemporary
Jewish composers such as Debbie
Friedman, Craig Taubman, and Paul
and Saul Zim. Cantor Berris produced
the CD.
B'nai Moshe is at 6800 Drake
Road,West Bloomfield. The first part
of each week's Shabbat Odyssey serv-
ice, which takes place before the actu-
al beginning of Shabbat, includes
instrumental music, using electronic
synthesizers, guitars, and tam-
boulines. Fresh fruit, cut-up veggies
and other light snacks are available
from 5:45 p.m. on.
The service is a lively, interactive
Kabbalat Shabbat experience using the
liturgy of the Conservative Siddur
adapted for optimal participation. It
aims to get people out of their seats
and onto their feet, singing, clapping
their hands, and dancing around the
room to bring in the Shabbat with joy
and serve as an emotional kick-start
for a full 25-hour Shabbat experience
each week.
Absolutely no knowledge of
Hebrew is required in order to partici-
pate and enjoy. The program is open
to the community.
