the experience as told and retold by
participants to potential participants
reaches out beyond the headlines that
frighten.
It is a genuine pluralism, open to all
Jewish young adults. It is not limited
by ideology, movement affiliation,
sectarian differences or prejudgments.
All Birthright Israel trips are inclusive
and nonjudgmental. Come as you are.
You are welcome.
It is a welcoming openness to all
young adults. The fact that so many
different trip organizers offer a plural-
istic menu of possibilities opens up
Jewish eyes as never before.
No hidden agendas here. Come and
meet the people of Israel. Come and
discover your place in the unfolding
Jewish story.
Yet no reason or set of reasons can
explain adequately the response of
these thousands of young adults. It
is all the above and more — that
engaging mystery of Jewish existence
that was witnessed at Sinai when the
gift of Torah freely and lovingly
given was accepted and embraced by
our people.
Now again, echoing the moment at
Sinai that transformed our history, the
gift of Israel is freely and lovingly
given, accepted and embraced by a
new generation of our people. ❑

Finally A Checking Account That Pays You...

he misses a much bigger one:
Israeli governments of all flavors have
never sanctioned virulent hatred in the
media, or demonizing textbooks in the
schools, or youth camps devoted to
propagating hate, or broadcasts exhort-
ing children to trade their toys for rocks
and go confront soldiers.
The problem will persist so long
as there are those in the Israeli and
American governments, particularly
the leaders in the peace camp, who
encourage Arafat with their silence.
Rabbi Mandell may be right about
the difficulty of ending the hatred,
but halting the incitement can begin
immediately. The leaders of both
peoples have it well within their
power to begin by setting an exam-
ple and enforcing it. All it takes is
courage
