so many have decided to put off trips
to Israel, why the success of
Birthright Israel? Why did so many
come and so few cancel our?
A number of reasons can be given.
The leadership and supporters of
Birthright Israel made a commitment
to keep it going, security. was tight-
ened, itineraries changed, free time
limited and a close, cooperative effort
maintained with Israeli security per-
sonnel. These college-age adults
understood and cooperated. The gift
of a lifetime was respected and cher-
ished.
Without question, the age of par-
ticipants made a difference. More
independent than teenagers, they
could make their own decisions. They
were cognizant of the dangers and
responsive to more stringent security
measures. At the same time, many
felt an intense need to be here, part
of the Jewish people at a critical time.
Additionally, our participants were
uplifted by the free gift — a gift from
the Jewish people, generous philan-
thropists, the North American federa-
tion communities, and the State of
Israel. They accepted the gift as an
opportunity and privilege — an
opportunity that might never be
repeated and a privilege that demand-
ed courageous presence.
Their response and personal affir-
mation joined with the elation of
finding their place with the Jewish
people.
It is on the Birthright Israel trip
that they discover and rediscover their
personal Jewishness, combined with
the awareness that they are part of the
polity, the "we" of Jewish people-
hood.
The discovery of their Jewish self
comes first through their peers, the
community on the bus, then through
their mifgashim, genuine encounters
with Israeli peers, and finally with the
people of Israel.
The gift invariably invokes aware-
ness of community and the recogni-
tion that we are part of a larger
whole, the Jewish people. That loyal-
ty to each other continues long past
the trip itself.

Beyond Headlines

Word of mouth from friends and sib-
lings continues to bring new appli-
cants and participants. Enthusiastic
experiences continue to impact even a
year after the trip itself. The power of
