E

arold S. Tobias was some-
one that people would turn
to.
Mr. Tobias, 82, of West
Bloomfield, died June 10. He was a
Navy captain in World War II.
"He was a very kind and generous
man, and very connected with people,"
said Barbara Gordon, his daughter.
"He had an endless capacity to be open
to people, everyone became part ...Ellis
family. He was often asked to do spe-
cial projects or be on committees for
Temple Israel."
Mr. Tobais was a certified public
accountant and partner in Tobias,
Tobias, Vandeputte and Skulsky. At
Temple Israel, he served as a board
member and was a past president of
. the brotherhood. He was a representa-
tive of the temple in Synagogue 2000.
A member of Perfection Lodge, he
sat on the boards of the ALS
Association and Wayne County Family
Services and worked on committees at
the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit and Temple Israel.
Two years ago, Mr. Tobias' family
gathered in Mexico to honor his 80th
birthday. "He didn't want a party, he
just wanted his family with him — and
36 went," said Mrs. Gordon. "He sel-

dom missed an event that any of his
grandchildren were in. Whether it was
sports or plays or recitals, he tried to
get to everything."
Ruth, his wife of 15 years, said he
was a man of integrity and ethics.
"Right was right, but he was tolerant of
other people's failures," she said. "He
was not judgmental. He liked every-
body — he never saw anything bad in
anybody. Consequently he brought out
the best in other people. He was just a
loving, wonderful human being."
It was a second marriage for both of
them. "We were both widowed, and a
mutual friend made sure that our two
lives met," she said. "It was instant
recognition that we both had some-
thing special between us. We brought
happiness from our past lives, but we
certainly were enriched with each
other."
An avid symphony goer, Mr. Tobias
loved opera, and traveling to Europe,
Israel and New York.
Mr. Tobias is survived by his wife,
Ruth Tobias; children, Barbara "Bobbi"
and Robert Gordon of Huntington
Woods, Dr. Terry Tobias and Dr.
