Local youth programming will get a
boost thanks to a major bequest from
the estate of the late Stephen H.
Schulman to the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit.
Mr. Schulman, a professor for more
than 30 years at Wayne State
University Law School in Detroit,
died July 30, 2000, in Ann Arbor. He
was 67.
With the bequest from the estate of
Mr. Schulman, Federation is creating
the Stephen Schulman Millennium
Fund for Jewish Youth. In addition,
the Stephen Schulman PACE
(Perpetual Annual Campaign
Endowment) Fund is being estab-
lished to benefit Federation's Annual
Campaign.
Mr. Schulman also designated a gift
to Jewish Family Service, a Federation
constituent agency, to provide support
for victims of domestic violence.
Other beneficiaries are two Detroit
Jewish congregations — the
Reconstructionist Congregation of
Detroit and the Isaac Agree
Downtown Synagogue.
Mr. Schulman, who earned law
degrees from Columbia University
and New York University, joined the
WSU faculty in 1966. During his 33-
year career, in which he taught more
than 5,500 students, Mr. Schulman
received numerous awards for excel-
lence in teaching from Wayne State
and the law school. He was a contrib-
utor to the Law Review and served as
its faculty adviser. for 27 years.
Mr. Schulman also contributed to
the reform of Michigan's corporate
law through his work with the busi-
ness law section of the Michigan State
Bar. He lectured frequently on corpo-
rate law reform and co-authored a
leading treatise on this topic.
The Stephen Schulman Millennium
Fund for Jewish Youth is part of the
Jewish Federation's Millennium
Campaign for Detroit's Jewish Future.
Mr. Schulman's bequest will be used
for Jewish youth group and outreach
leadership, creating meaningful pro-
grams and leadership opportunities to
increase teenagers' involvement in the
Jewish community.
The fund will be a key resource for
developing our community's next gen-
eration of leaders from synagogue-
based youth groups, national teen
programs, Zionist youth organizations
and other youth groups. While teens
gain a knowledge base of Judaism
