through formal Jewish education. the
opportunity to express their Judaism
through hands-on programs and
involvement is crucial in forming a
positive Jewish identity.
Currently, there are more than
2,000 Jewish.youth group members in
metropolitan Detroit. Despite the
connection between youth group
involvement and future communal
participation, Jewish youth services in
metropolitan Detroit are under-fund-
ed and operate with significant finan-
cial constraints. While many metro-
politan Detroit Jewish youth groups
receive some Federation funding, they
require additional support in order to
offer the breadth and depth of pro-
gramming and services needed to
increase and enrich youth involve-
ment.
The Stephen Schulman Millennium
Fund for Jewish Youth will signifi-
cantly enable the development of
quality staff, establish effective mar-
keting systems and provide the overall
increased fiscal support necessary for
our youth groups to increase involve-
ment and make a real difference in
the lives of metro Detroit's Jewish
youth.
Howard Neistein, Federation's Chief
Planning Officer, said a committee is
being formed to carry out the intern
of the new fund. The committee will
be chaired by Federation President
Penny Blumenstein.
