WAYNE NEWTON sends a sincere
"sorry" regarding his recent scheduled
appearance at Andiamo Celebrity
Showroom, postponed because of a
medical emergency.
The dates have been moved to
Thursday and Friday, July 19 and 20
... Tickets purchased for the original
dates will be honored.
MAIL DEPT ... from Jerry Light ...
"You brought tears to my eyes when
you wrote about the delis around the
old neighborhoods back in the early
1940s when I was a kid. I used to work
for Wilson's Deli, owned by Max
Wilson, on Monterey and Dexter, as a
delivery boy and waiter. Max taught me
to be a counterman and Jack Goldberg,
from Stage Deli, also worked there and
also taught me the trade.
"They also taught me how to play
card games like klabiash and pinochle,
which they played in the back with
their friends. In the later years, I
worked for Lefkofsky's on Dexter
Blvd. Sam, Ben and Leo. I then
worked for Fleischman's Deli on
Richton and Linwood on the week-
ends, while going trough high school.
In fact, Mr. Fleischman wrote a letter
to the draft board that I was indispen-
sable and that he needed me to stay
and work there. He even offered me a
partnership in the business.
"Mr. Fleischman was a great guy to
work for, but I had to leave him
because I went to college to become a
pharmacist and owned my own my
own stores, Lighthouse Drugs, Inc.
"Danny, to this day, I am still a very
good counterman. I could slice a rye
bread in seconds without missing a
stroke."
OLDIE BUT GOODIE ... from
Enid Weiner ... A retiree was given a
set of golf clubs by her co-workers.
Thinking she'd try the game, the
woman asked the local pro for lessons,
explaining that she knew nothing
whatsoever about the game.
The pro showed her the stance and
swing, then said, "Just hit the ball
toward the flag on the first green."
The novice then reed up and
smacked the ball straight down the
fairway and onto the green, where it
stopped inches from the hole.
"Now what?" she asked her dumb-
founded teacher.
"Uh, — you're supposed to hit the
ball into the cup," the pro stammered,
finally able to speak again.
The beginner responded in a dis-
gusted tone, "Oh, great! Now you tell
me!"❑
