Art OfThe Heart

DAVID SACHS

icki Berlin always had a
smile on her face and was
everyone's best friend.
"She would
always tell us that it was very
important to maintain rela-
tionships," said her son, Jay.
"It was almost a mantra for
her.
"She still has her first
friend."
Last Nov. 18, Mrs. Berlin,
born Rochelle Greenblatt,
visited with her high school
friends at the 40-year Detroit
Mumford reunion. She had
been diagnosed with thyroid
cancer earlier that day. She
died April 22 at age 58.
Ricki
Mrs. Berlin graduated
Wayne State University and
taught art in the Southfield Public
Schools in the mid-1960s prior to
raising a family. But as her two sons
grew older, she focused on painting
and developed into a critically
acclaimed and commercially success-
ful artist.
"She was an extremely talented
and humble artist," said Madeline
Posner, who displayed Mrs. Berlin's
works as one of the permanent artists
on exhibit at Posner Gallery in
Birrningham.
"She was very self-effacing, just
bubbly all the time," said Posner.
"Whenever we'd call her and say,
`Ricki, we sold a painting today,' she
would just giggle and laugh. She
could not believe how talented and
how well accepted she was.
"Her work was phenomenal," said
Posner. "We sold probably as much,
if not more, of her work in the last
couple years as any other artist we
represent."
Mrs. Berlin, of West Bloomfield,
painted with acrylics on canvas, in
an abstract mode. In her early career,
she focused on geometric shapes, but
in recent years had included human
forms.
In a statement that accompanied a
recent exhibit, Mrs. Berlin described
her inspiration and technique:
"In a chaotic and disintegrating
world of unorganized organization, I
respond by creating paintings of bal-
ance and symmetry. The calming
effect of these developed pieces
counteract the social condition that
provoked them.
"On a fresh surface, I draw a min-
imal geometric composition. Then I
apply paint in a
random fashion,
developing a color
field. Layering
glaze upon glaze,
my goal is to
develop a rich star-
face with one color
emanating through
the other."
Mrs. Berlin had
a wonderful sense
of color and her
warmth came
through in her
work,"
said Posner.
Berlin
"And she was
growing all the
time — getting better and better."
Mrs. Berlin had a studio in
Southfield and honed her talent at
the Birmingham Bloomfield Art
Center. A- fund has been set up there
in her memory to help students who
cannot afford to take classes or are
unable to purchase supplies.
"During her lifetime as an artist,
teacher, friend, confidante, mother,
daughter, wife, sister and grand-
mother, she was able to touch and
influence so many people with her
grace, charm and vitality," said son
Jay.
"There was enough love in her
3,
heart for everyone.
Mrs. Berlin is survived by her hus-
band of 37 years, Arthur D. Berlin;
sons and daughter-in-law Jay and
Meredith Berlin of Illinois, Jeffrey
Berlin of Ohio; granddaughter
Spencer Rose Berlin; mother Bea
Greenblatt Boslow and sister and
brother-in-law Sharon and Ernie
Turken of Farmington Hills.
She was the loving daughter of the
late Jack Greenblatt and the late
David Boslow.
Interment was at Adat Shalom
Memorial Park. Contributions may
be made to the Ricki Berlin
Scholarship Fund, c/o Birmingham
