ESPN-TV crew visits Detroit to film show
on Hank Greenberg.

e's been immortalized with
a statue at Comerica Park
and in an award-winning
movie by former Detroiter
Aviva Kempner.
Now, legendary Detroit Tiger slug-
ger Hank Greenberg will be the focus
of a one-hour ESPN television special.
Slated for broadcast May 11, the
program will be part of a series called
Sports Century and Beyond. More than
50 athletes will be featured, each in a
separate one-hour show.
Other former Detroit athletes to be
featured include Tiger pitching
stars Mark Fidrych and Denny
McLain, Red Wing hockey
icon Gordie Howe, Piston bas-
ketball great Isiah Thomas and
the late heavyweight boxing
champion Joe Louis.
In mid-January, an ESPN
crew headed by producer Dan
Weinberg and associate pro-
ducer Jeff Ausiello spent two
days in and around Detroit
interviewing and filming.
The two are working togeth-
er on several of the new documen-
taries.
"It's like a big book report, except
you get paid," said Ausiello.
They spent much of their time at
Congregation Shaarey Zedek — at
both its former building on Chicago
Boulevard in Detroit (dedicated in
1932) and the current sanctuary in
Southfield.
It was the Chicago Boulevard syna-
gogue where Greenberg made his
famous entrance at Yom Kippur serv-
ices in 1934, after refusing to suit up
for a World Series game.
"I have flashbacks of everybody
turning around to look at him," said
