Medical miracles
start with research

BEATRICE DIAMOND, 81, of
Livonia, died April 5.
She is survived by her sons and
daughters-in-law, Larry and Yvonne
Diamond of Canton, Howard and
Karen Diamond of Pinckney; grand-
children, Timothy, Natalie, Mike and
Andrew Diamond; sister and brother-
in-law, Fay and Herbert Chernick of
Southfield. For 52 years, she was the
beloved wife of the late Peter
Diamond.
Interment at Beth El Memorial
Park. Contributions may be directed
to a charity of one's choice.

LILLIE ERMAN, 98, of Oak Park,
died April 4. She was a teacher and
principal in Detroit.
She is survived by her nieces and
nephews, Joann and Susie Shecter of
Detroit, Linda and Richard Lulkin of
Farmington Hills, Mivi and Leonard
Rachmiel, Gloria and Jack Hurwitz,
Joanie and Sheldon Applefield,

ETHEL FISCHER, 92, of West
Bloomfield, died April 4.
She is survived by her brother and
sister-in-law, Albert and Marti Fischer
of West Bloomfield; nieces and
nephews, Ruby (Sheldon) Fridson,
Rosalind Weiss, Sheryl Zeiger, Robert
(Nancy) Fischer.
Graveside services were held at the
Clover Hill Park Cemetery in
Birmingham. Contributions may be

HENRY JOSEPH FOX, 97, of
Grand Rapids, died March 31. He
graduated from the University of
Michigan College of Literature

Science and Arts in 1935 and from
U-M Law School in 1938. He prac-
ticed law in the Detroit area from
the time of his graduation.
Mr. Fox served as a -lieutenant in
the U.S. Navy in World War II. He
was an avid collector of antiques and
art and was a violinist with various
community symphony orchestras.
He supported many causes dedicated
to human rights.
He is survived by his wife of 52
years, Sally Fox of New York City;
children, Amy B. Ryberg and Erich
L. Ryberg, Dr. Gordon A. Fox,
Barbara S. Fox; grandchild,
Benjamin C. Ryberg; daughter-in-
law, Kathy A. Whitley.
Services will be held 1 p.m.
Sunday, April 29, at the
Birmingham Temple. Contributions
may be sent to the Detroit
Symphony Orchestra or the
Southfield/Royal Oak Orchestra.

IDA FRANKEL, 96, of West
Bloomfield, died April 5.
She is survived by her daughters
and sons-in-law, Frances and
Frederic Marblestone of West
Bloomfield, Marilyn and Jerold
Hoskow of Farmington Hills; grand-
children, Ken and Janisse
Marblestone, Steven and Julie
Marblestone, Jule and Brian
Weisberg, Laura and Andrew
Goldberg, Jeff and Julie Hoskow;
great-grandchildren, Melissa
Marblestone, Haley Marblestone,
Kenna Marblestone, Kevin
Marblestone, Lauren Weisberg,
Matthew Weisberg, Dana Goldberg,
Benjamin Goldberg. She was the
beloved wife of the late George
• Frankel.

LOUIS GELFAND, 88, former
Detroiter of Seattle, Wash., died
March 24. He began work at
Cadillac Motor in 1928 at age 15
while studying engineering at college
at night. Starting as a vehicle engine
and chassis detailer, he then worked
on Cadillac aircraft engines and
other automotive engineering pro-
jects.
During World War II, Mr.
Gelfand was engaged in armament
and ordnance engineering with
Tucker Aircraft, the A.J. Brandt Co.

(St. Louis ordnance plant) and
Embassy Industrial and Sterling
Engineering. He then returned to
General Motors, where he was
instrumental in major design and
engineering projects. He was the
styling division project engineer for
the Le Sabre and Buick XP300
experimental autos. He then had
chief engineering responsibility for
the GM Motorama Kitchen of
Tomorrow in the 1950s. He retired
as senior staff engineer/assistant to
the technical director of General
Motors Design/Styling Division.
Mr. Gelfand was an inventor who
held many patents and was a mem-
ber of the Society of Automotive
Engineers. He was a life member of
Congregation Shaarey Zedek and
served on its house committee for
35 years. He also served on the
board of United Hebrew Schools,
was one of the founders of the
Detroit Chapter of the American
Technion Society and served as its
president and a member of the
board of directors. He was also
active in Scouting and served as a
scoutmaster.
Mr. Gelfand is survived by his
son and daughter-in-law, Gerald and
Verena Gelfand of Seattle; daughter
and son-in-law, Judith and Robert
Dankanics of Lebanon, N.J.; grand-
children, Eric and Jason Gelfand,
Laura and Eva Dankanics. He was
the husband of the late Rose Yolles
Gelfand.
Graveside services were held.

Seventh Ave., New York, NY 10019.

CLARENCE GOLDBERG, 79, of
Bloomfield Hills, died April 7. He
was a retired teacher and counselor
in Detroit and co-owner of Minit
Photo Studio.
Mr. Goldberg is survived by his
wife, Bess Lupiloff Goldberg; daugh-
ters and sons-in-law, Marci and
Steven Schwartz of West Bloomfield,
Sandee and Mark Giovanniello of
Connecticut; son and daughter-in-
law, Steven and Devra Goldberg of
Farmington Hills; stepchildren,
Karol and Douglas Ross, Barbara
and David Rubinstein, Harold
Lupiloff; grandchildren, Erin, Jonas
and Gabriel Schwartz, Jacob
Goldberg, Leah and Victoria
Giovanniello, Mitchell, Douglas and
Julie Rose, Daniel, Amy and
Kenneth Berent, Erica and Keith
Lupiloff; sisters and brother-in-law,
Evelyn and Oscar Romolt of Illinois
