Why we're in Israel now

Photographed atop Masada (in the world's oldest functioning synagogue), March 18, 2001

"We came to Israel to celebrate our son's Bar Mitzvah. We knew it
would be an unforgettable experience for the whole family. But
considering all that is happening right now, this trip will mean a
great deal more.

"We could have had our son's Bar Mitzvah back home. But it
would never be as meaningful. Especially now. You have to be
here to feel the people's faith, and their passionate commitment
to peace, and to this land.

"In the days before the ceremony, we toured the holiest sites in
Jerusalem. We saw the Dead Sea Scrolls, we walked through
the Old City. Everything reminded us why it's so important to
show our support now.

"We want to give our children an experience that will stay
with them for a lifetime. We can think of no better way than
showing them Israel now."

"When you're here, you see an Israel you don't see on the
evening news. The shops and cafes in Jerusalem are filled with
people. And everyone is so friendly and happy to see us.
