yman Blumenstein worked
hard all his life, beginning
t at
e,
age 12.
He emigrated with his
family from Poland to Canada after
World War I, but quit school at 12 to
help support them. He ultimately
became a cutter and pattern maker in
the ladies' garment industry.
Mr. Blumenstein later moved to
Detroit and founded Madora
Sportswear, a manufacturer of ladies'
clothing, located downtown.
"He was very hard worker, who
never really had a childhood or time to
enjoy life until he retired in his 70s,"
said his daughter-in-law, Penny
Blumenstein.
"He was an old man at 50 and a
young man at 80. He became younger
when he had time to be younger. He
had a sense of adventure. He had joy of
life when he had time to enjoy it."
Mr. Blumenstein, 94, of Orchard
Lake, died of a heart attack March 21
at his winter residence in Fort
Lauderdale, Fla.
Mr. Blumenstein was a founder of
Sara Tugman Bais Chabad Torah
Center in West Bloomfield and knew
its rabbi, Elimelech Silberberg, for
more than 25 years. Last September,
Mr. Blumenstein and Sonia, his wife of
67 years, received the Torah Center's
Keser Shem Toy (Crown of the Good
Name) award for their many years of
service.
At that time, the Torah Center
dedicated its Hyman and Sonia
Blumenstein Outreach Institute, featur-
ing a speakers program and other out-
reach activities to enhance Jewish learn-
ing.
"He was a quiet person, very
reserved, very discreet," said Rabbi
Silberberg. "But in his quiet way, he
accomplished a lot.
"He was a man of incredible integri-
ty and patience. He had many grand-
children, and every one felt special.
"At 70 years old, he was looking for
new vistas," said the rabbi. "He
upgraded his Judaism. He became an
observant shomer Shabbos [Shabbat
observer].
"But in every area of life he was a
fountain of youth, always looking to
upgrade his quality of life."
In his 80s, Mr. Blumenstein broke
his ankle roller-skating with a grand-
child at a school event. "You didn't
know whether to cry at his pain or to
Hyman Blumenstein
smile at his vigor," said the rabbi.
A family friend, Rabbi Chaim
Bergstein of Bais Chabad of
Farmington Hills, said Mr.
Blumenstein communicated love in
every phase of his relationship with his
offspring.
"I've marveled at the unity of the
family over the years," said Rabbi
Bergstein. "The reason for that unity is
the unlimited love he expressed to
them. I find that to be the core of his
life."
Penny Blumenstein, president of the
Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit, said, "It was a tribute to him CO
have raised a son and four daughters
who are sensitive, caring and concerned
about community. He was a private
man, but kvelled at the accomplishments
of his children and grandchildren.
"I was happy that he called me a
daughter, too."
Mr. Blumenstein is survived by his
wife, Sonia Blumenstein; son and
daughter-in-law Harold and Penny
Blumenstein of Bloomfield Hills;
daughters and sons-in-law Hanna Reta
and Dr. Gordon Fishman of Newport
Beach, Calif., Frances and Ronald
Rogers of Southfield, Eileen and
Gerald Borsand of Bloomfield Hills,
Leah and Frederic Ruby of West
Bloomfield; sister Fanny Greenbaum of
West Bloomfield; sister-in-law Sonia
Blumenstein of Oak Park; many grand-
children and great-grandchildren.
Contributions may be made to
Birmingham Bloomfield Chai Center,
357 North Woodward, Bloomfield
Hills, MI 48304; the Hyman and
Sonia Blumenstein Outreach Institute
of the Sara Tugman Bais Chabad Torah
Center, 5595 W Maple Road, West
Bloomfield, MI 48322: or to a charity
of one's choice.
Interment was at Clover Hill Park
Cemetery. Arrangements by Hebrew
Memorial Chapel.
