A Reign Of Locusts

A

s vou may have noticed from the title,
there was an unusual use of a word.
The "unusual" is fine with me; the
uneducated goof is intolerable.
After having taught English for 30 years (the
last 10 as a "foreign language"), I am still
incensed by those who
should know better and
do not seem to.
For instance, I shudder
when I hear someone use
"less" for "fewer" ("There
were less bottles on the
shelf yesterday").
What is with all the •
new verbs we are getting
these days? It seems that
anything can be made
SY MANELLO
into an action word: "Do
Editorial Assistant
not disrespect your moth-
er," urged a TV judge.
And from TV-news peo-
ple: "He will football his way to a scholarship;"
"They limoed to the prom."
And when did some verbs become "active"?
Ex.: "The magician vanished the bridge."
If you are pointing out differences, use
"from;" for comparisons use "than." For exam-
ple: The latest salesman's approach was different
from the others'. It was better than most. Please
do not insist that "His offer was better from the
other dealer."
I never realized how many frustrated serving
people we had out there; otherwise, how do you
account for the number who use "waiting on" in
their common reference? They insist they were
"waiting on a friend" at the mall, "waiting on"
the check to arrive, etc.
As a side note, I've given up being fussy about
others inviting people to dinner as opposed to
for dinner. After all, who am I to account for
people's cannabalistic tendencies?
My solution is to "luck" myself to Las Vegas,
where money does the talking.

ou may know that the Shulchan Aruch is the banquet table at
the Passover seder and is listed in the Haggadah as one of
the 14 rituals of the seder. But Shulchan Aruch has other
meanings in Judaism. Can you name them?
