Then one Sunday, they appeared in
the middle of a raging snowstorm
when there was hardly a soul outside,
and I knew that it was serious busi-
ness and time to take action. I pulled
my son to the side and suggested —
in Hebrew — that perhaps this learn-
ing experience ought to end, if noth-
ing else, in fairness to these two dedi-
cated souls on a mission. He agreed
with me.
At the conclusion of the session, he
told them very politely that he has
learned about their religion as much
as he wanted and thank you very
much. The two left, obviously disap-
pointed, and never returned.
Poet Hayyim Nahman Bialik says
in one of his important poems:
"...And who art thou rock, who art
thou flint stone, in the face of a
Hebrew lad engaged in Torah?"
With the strengthening of Jewish
consciousness, there should be no fear
of Jews for Jesus or other proselytizing
attempts.

The Burton school community
recently lost a loyal and trusted
friend, Milton Rose ("A Friend to
Children," Feb. 23, page 106).
Milton died Feb. 19 from a variety
of medical complications. He was 87
years old.
For the last 18 1 /2 years, Milton
and his wife, Zelda, gave of them-
selves to help the children of Hunt-
ington Woods. Milton, a former jew-
eler, really never retired. Instead, he
spent his time and money trying to
help others.
His dedication to helping chil-
dren in my first-grade class at Bur-
ton Elementary School was both
generous and much appreciated. He
was always positive, optimistic and,
above all, helpful. He brought a
feeling of family to both my stu-
dents and myself.
For those of us who have been
fortunate enough to have known
and loved Milton, he set a wonder-
ful example. My friend Milton will
be greatly missed, but never forgot-
ten.
