The wide-ranging discussion at the Knesset building included United
Jewish Communities initiatives in Israel and increasing the rate of aliyah
from distressed communities, especially Argentina.
It also covered the prime minister-elect's conditions for resuming for-
mal peace talks with the Palestinian Authority.
New York-based UJC represents 189 Jewish Federations and 400 inde-
pendent communities in North America.
"Sharon made it clear that he's in favor of peace discussions, but not
until Yasser Arafat makes a public declaration to end the violence, that
he stops inciting people to take action against Israel through television
and newspapers, and that there is more of the return to security servic-
es," said Tauber, who chairs UJC's executive committee.
"So before he'll sit down and talk peace — or the end of hostilities —
these three things are going to have to be done."

New York -- Michigan State
University is among the seven univer-
sity, communal and nonprofit groups
receiving a Birthright Israel post-pro-
gramming grant.
The post-,trip programs are available
to nearly 17,000 birthright alumni
who have traveled to Israel on a
Birthright Israel program.
"We offer these grants to inspire our
alumni to stay involved and continue
to explore. their cultural heritage," said
Arlene Kaufman. She and her hus-
band, Sanford Baklor, are the grant
benefactors.
Other grant recipients are:
Washington Institute for Jewish
Leadership and Values; Union of
American Hebrew Congregations
Youth Division; Hillel: The
Foundation for Jewish Campus Life;
University of Texas Hillel; Institute for
Contemporary Midrash; and
GesherCity Boston.
"This grant will really help us pro-
vide institutional teaching and aware-
ness about modern Israel at Michigan
State," said Steven Weiland, director
of Jewish Studies Programs at
Michigan State University.
This grant would create a course
specifically geared to Birthright Israel
alumni, "American Jewish Identity and
Israeli Experience."
