Know Whizz- To Do

Its true: this story does not end the
way you (and every parent) planned
with husbands and wives, children and
grandchildren, all living happily ever
after. But I believe that no one should

address once she no longer feels she must
hide from you. Stop mourning for her
and the things she is not, and accept and
love her for who she is.

Dear Wendy:
I have a wonderful husband. a sound

marriage and a beautiful new baby. In
spite of it all, I have been feeling
depressed for several months. I have. run
out of sympathetic listeners. Friends and
family try to cheer me up by pointing to
everything I have in my life. (They may
as well come out and say, "People are
buried alive in India, what do you have
to complain about?") My husband is
supportive but even he has been saying
that it's time for me to "get over it." I
know everyone means well, but their
words end up making me feel worse, not
better.

— Feeling Down And Blue

Let me preface my answer by saying
that I don't know you. I don't know how
old your baby is and I am not privy to
any parrs of your past. By issuing all of
the above disclaimers, I hope to stem the
ride of angry mail that might come my
way for offering the following diagnosis:
You may be suffering from postpartum
depression. (Men: Don't make this diag-
nosis at home. It is the equivalent of sug-

gesting your wife has PMS).
*If you are not ordinarily prone to
depression or moodiness, the birth of a
baby can often be a trigger. You have a lot
to contend with: hormones, nursing and
sleep deprivation, guilt for feeling down
when you have a healthy newborn and a
body that doesn't match your body
image. Before you see a counselor, see
your obstetrician/gynecologist.
Postpartum depression usually lifts within
six months after your baby is born. If
however, your depression fails to dissi-
pate, see a psychiatrist. Depression often
has no connection CO circumstance, and
no good heath care professional will
council you to dwell on your good for-
tune.
