Shaarey Zedek Youth Choir presents
"The Megillah According to
Walt Disney."

SHELLI LIEBMAN DORFMAN
Staff-Writer

T

he halls of Congregation
Shaarey Zedek rang with
the tune of a familiar song,
but with a unique, yet fit-
ting, new verse.
To the music of the Mickey Mouse
Club theme song, members of the
synagogue's youth choir sang the
words: "First in war and last in peace,
seared in hearts of men. H-A-M-A-N-
T-A-S-H-E-N." Fourth- through
sixth-graders were rehearsing for the
21st annual Haman's Hideway pro-
duction, "The Megillah According to
Walt Disney," to be presented as part
of a Purim dinner theater Sunday,
March 18, at Shaarey Zedek in
Southfield.
"It tells the story of Purim," says
Shaarey Zedek Cantor Chaim
Najman. "It uses familiar Disney
songs, but with the lyrics rewritten to
fit the story of Purim." Singers in the
play will be costumed like Disney
characters.
Cantor Najman says the play was
written by Norman Roth and directed
by Audrey Baker and assistant director
Raya Samet. Baker also directs the
choir throughout the year.

"This is a great outlet for the kids
who usually do serious performing,
like singing during the (synagogue)
service or in concert," says Cantor
Najman, who founded the choir and
introduced the annual show idea.
The performance takes place after a
family-style dinner, the traditional
Purim seudah (feast).
Mary Knoll and Karen Alpiner,
production co-chairs, have dedicated
the show in memory of Shaarey Zedek
pak president and community leader
David Hermelin. "He loved life,"
Alpiner says. "He loved the singing
part of life.
"We all need to focus more on
community, and bringing community
together," Alpiner says. And David
exemplified that so much." ❑
