ter. Other members responded to fliers
distributed through synagogue sisterhood
organizations and posted at local craft
and needlework shops. Still more joined
through word of mouth.
In no time, we were having meet-

ings," Eder said.
Marilyn Feingold, a Farmington resi-
dent, joined the national group after
receiving a copy of a flier at Adat Shalom
Synagogue. Feingold learned needlework
at age 7, when her mother, a tailor who
learned her trade in Poland, taught her
some simple stitches. Now she's treasurer

of the local chapter.
"I am interested in needlework and I
am interested in creating Judaica, so this
is a great place for me to be," she said,
pointing out that the reference to pome-
granates comes from a passage in Exodus
that describes the needlework in the
robes of the clergy.

Regular Get-Togethers

The chapter holds classes open to the
public five times a year and its own
monthly meetings, where the members
work on independent projects while tak-
ing care of chapter business. During
these sessions, held in members' homes

or in synagogues, a project involving
some form of Judaica is presented. Past
examples include a Chanukah wall hang-
ing, kippot and beaded bracelets.
The group also works on community
projects, like stitching a communal quilt
and creating challah covers to be includ-
ed in mikvah baskets distributed through

One of these projects attracted
Miriam Freeling to the group a few years
ago. Searching for an Aleph-Bet sampler
to make as a gift for a friend, Freeling
found the national guild and became a
member of the Chicago chapter.
A resident of Lincoln Park, Freeling
remains active in the local guild chapter,
but says a sense of camaraderie with the
other guild members keeps her active.
"I thought it would be a good chance
to meet other stitchers who share my
passion for needlework," she said, adding

that she also likes to meet with fellow
Jewish women since there aren't very
many Jews near her downriver home.
