Feingold learned needlework at age 7, when her mother, a tailor who learned her trade in Poland, taught her some simple stitches. Now she's treasurer of the local chapter. "I am interested in needlework and I am interested in creating Judaica, so this is a great place for me to be," she said, pointing out that the reference to pome- granates comes from a passage in Exodus that describes the needlework in the robes of the clergy. Regular Get-Togethers The chapter holds classes open to the public five times a year and its own monthly meetings, where the members work on independent projects while tak- ing care of chapter business. During these sessions, held in members' homes or in synagogues, a project involving some form of Judaica is presented. Past examples include a Chanukah wall hang- ing, kippot and beaded bracelets. Searching for an Aleph-Bet sampler to make as a gift for a friend, Freeling found the national guild and became a member of the Chicago chapter. A resident of Lincoln Park, Freeling remains active in the local guild chapter, but says a sense of camaraderie with the other guild members keeps her active. "I thought it would be a good chance to meet other stitchers who share my passion for needlework," she said, adding that she also likes to meet with fellow Jewish women since there aren't very many Jews near her downriver home.
