we are aware of the degree of identifi-
cation with Judaism of quite a few
nonaffiliated Jews, this article offers a
much broader survey of the outlook
of many people in all walks of life.
What emerges is that a consider-
able portion of the nonaffiliated pop-
ulation have a strong identification
with the heritage, culture and values
of Judaism, rather than just being
neutral and nonparticipating.

Clinton's Last
Days Unnerving

Without discussing his involvement in
the Oslo Peace Accords, which were not
really favored by the general Israeli pop-
ulation, or the continuing support for
financing funds and programs designed
to aid the Palestinian Authority, despite
continuing evidence of misuse of such
funding, and without requiring that PA
leader Yassir Arafat require changes in
the way in which his authority was fail-
ing to change the climate for peace
among his own supporters, two actions
in President Bill Clinton's last months
in office place a very succinct exclama-
tion point on his terms as president of
the United States.
The first is the obvious self-motiva-
tion to obtain a Middle East peace
solely to add to his own "legacy" after
leaving the White House.
The second is the fact that he failed
to pardon Jonathan Pollard. Pollard's
imprisonment was lengthened due to
the urgings of then-Secretary of Defense
Caspar Weinberger. He did pardon a
man [Marc Rich] who allegedly evaded
taxes, has been a fugitive living in grand
style and now is eligible to return to the
. United States without fear of being
tried for his crime. Why was that man
pardoned? Many maintain because the
man's ex-wife had contributed substan-
tial funding to Democratic election
campaigns ["Unacceptable Gifts," Feb.
2, page 31].
