Chabad Adopts
Israeli Settlers

The 650 families in the Israeli commu-
nity of Emanuel have been taken under
the wing of congregants at the Sara
Tugman Bais Chabad Torah Center.
Headed by Alex Skoczylas, syna-
gogue president, the congregation is
seeking contributions to help the small
community outside Shechem, an area
where violence is commonplace.
Building begun in Emanuel in 1979
was abandoned due to builder's bank-
ruptcy, leaving unfinished dwellings,
large mortgages and townspeople with-
out homes. Even so, Emanuel's residents
have struggled to make a home for Jews
involved in Torah learning and related
occupations such as scribes, teachers
and kashruth (kosher) supervisors.
Struggling to remain in the commu-
nity, the settlers have had to use funds
designated for education for added
security. Transportation to and from
school as well as delivery of food sup-
plies has been erratic.
Donations to help the people of
Emanuel may be sent in the form of
checks made out to the Sara Tugman
Bais Chabad Torah Center, with a nota-
tion marked "Emanuel." Mail to 5595
West Maple Road, West Bloomfield,
MI 48322. For information, call Rabbi
Elimelech Silberberg, (248) 855-5549.

Web Site Shows
Old Synagogues

Since 1997, visitors to the World Wide
Web have been able to view and com-
ment on photographs of important and
beautiful structures from Detroit's past.
The site, compiled and maintained
by Lowell Boileau, includes a section
on "The Lost Synagogues of Detroit,"
with photos, addresses, information on
the current use of most every syna-
gogue ever located in the city. There's
also an opportunity for users to share
their reminiscences.
In addition to information on syna-
gogues, the site includes sections on
Tiger Stadium, Belle Isle, the North
Cass Revival, the implosion at the
downtown J.L. Hudson's and much
more.
Called The Fabulous Ruins of Detroit,
the site gives considerable attention to
revitalization of the city as well. It was
Yahoo Pick of the Year for 1998.
