Headed by Alex Skoczylas, syna- gogue president, the congregation is seeking contributions to help the small community outside Shechem, an area where violence is commonplace. Building begun in Emanuel in 1979 was abandoned due to builder's bank- ruptcy, leaving unfinished dwellings, large mortgages and townspeople with- out homes. Even so, Emanuel's residents have struggled to make a home for Jews involved in Torah learning and related occupations such as scribes, teachers and kashruth (kosher) supervisors. Struggling to remain in the commu- nity, the settlers have had to use funds designated for education for added security. Transportation to and from school as well as delivery of food sup- plies has been erratic. Donations to help the people of Emanuel may be sent in the form of checks made out to the Sara Tugman Bais Chabad Torah Center, with a nota- tion marked "Emanuel." Mail to 5595 West Maple Road, West Bloomfield, MI 48322. For information, call Rabbi Elimelech Silberberg, (248) 855-5549.
