MJI Hires Dean,
Offers Shoah Class

The Michigan Jewish Institute
(MP), the state's only four-year
Jewish college, has hired Dr. T.
Hershel Gardin for the newly creat-
ed position of vice president of
institutional
advance-
ment. He
also will
serve as
interim
dean of the
Oak Park-
based
school.
The new
Dr. T Hershel Gardin
position
was formed
in response to the school's growing
enrollment. A Lubavitch-sponsored
institution that received national
accreditation in 1998, the MJI now
has 69 students in its core bache-
lor's degree program.
Gardin spent the past 18 years at
The Wellness Plan, a managed care
organization. Previously, he was a
social psychology instructor at
Wayne State University and a
researcher in the fields of substance
abuse and community health
research and treatment.
He is a member of Shomrei
Yisroel Congregation in Oak Park.
Gardin will work with Dr.
David Kagan, who will remain as
the institute's president and dean
emeritus.
In addition to its college pro-
grams, the MJI offers several credit
courses for high school students.
The latest course is Exploring the
Holocaust II, which meets 7-9 p.m.
at Andover High School in
Bloomfield Hills. Rabbi Daniel
Arm will teach the course, which
begins Tuesday, Feb. 6 and runs 14
weeks.
Students who have passed the
MEAP (Michigan Educational
Assessment Program) can count the
course as a high school class. In
that case, tuition will be paid by
the school district through
Michigan's dual enrollment pro-
gram.
Enrollment is limited. Call
(248) 414-6900 for more informa-
tion.
