uestion: What adds up to 400 fifth-graders + their parents + more
than 80,000 pennies?
Answer: A lesson in tzedakah (charity).
Temple Beth El in Bloomfield Township was the site on Sunday,
Jan. 28, for the annual Tzedakah Experience and Penny Harvest. Chaired by
Cookie Gonik, Beth Margolin and Roz Blanck, the annual event teaches area
students about charitable giving.
Fifth-graders at area Jewish schools collected more than $8,000 for this year's
event, which will be donated to agencies supported by the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit. In the eight years of the Tzedakah Experience, the stu-
dents have raised $50,000.
Sponsors of this year's event included Bank One Michigan, the Jewish
Federation, the Agency for Jewish Education, the Jewish News, the Jewish
