came looking for me," recalled Pitt,
who was sure he was going to be
declared 4-F and declined Shaw's
offer.
"The next morning my mother woke
me up and gave me this card. I was 1-
A." So Pitt called Shaw. "I want to join
your band. Where do I go?" he asked.
Artie Shaw's band was sent through-
out the Pacific, drawing packed
crowds wherever it went. Pitt has a
collection of vintage photographs of
the era. In one, a Navy destroyer is
packed so tightly with appreci -ative lis-
teners that the faces of the musicians
are hardly visible. In another, much of
the background has been blacked out
for security reasons.
"One time, they bombarded us
while we were lying in a foxhole," Pitt

said. "A GI was in the foxhole next to
me, waiting for the bombardment to
be over." When the GI asked what
outfit Pitt and his friends belonged to,
they told him they were with the
Shaw band.
"He said, leez, you guys have a real
racket playing with the Artie Shaw
band,"' Pitt remembered. "That guy
was pretty stupid. After all, we were
[both] in foxholes."
Shaw left the Navy after about a
year. "He felt he was a nervous
wreck," Pitt said. "We elected Sam
Donohue leader of the band, but it
was still called Artie Shaw's band."
The remaining members of the All-
American All Stars still keep in touch,
