Psychiatrist Earns
High Honor
Gaucher (pronounced "Go-Shay")
Disease is the most common genetic
disease affecting Jews'of Eastern and
Central European descent. One out of
every ten carries the Gaucher gene —
it is far more prevalent than Tay-Sachs.
Dr. Howard H. Goldman, professor of
psychiatry at the University of Maryland
School of Medicine and a former
Detroiter, has received the Surgeon
General's Medallion for promoting men-
tal health awareness.
Surgeon Gen. David Satcher present-
ed the medallion at a meeting of the
American Public Health Association in
Boston. The medallion, the highest civil-
ian honor given by the surgeon general,
was for Goldman's "outstanding support
as the scientific editor of the Surgeon
General's Report on Mental Health."
The 1999 report, which used data
drawn from 3,000 studies, noted that
diseases such as depression, schizophrenia
and eating disorders can be as disabling
and serious as cancer and heart disease.
But the report found that a high percent-
age of mentally ill persons receive inade-
quate care because of outdated health
insurance policies and the stigma associ-
ated with mental illness.
"I am glad that the surgeon general
recognizes the importance of removing
barriers to treatment," Goldman said in
accepting the honor.
Goldman came to the University of
Maryland in 1985 as director of mental
health policy studies and he co-founded
the Center for Mental Health Services
Research.
Before joining the School of Medicine
faculty, he was an assistant institute
director at the National Institutes of
Mental Health, responsible for mental
health financing, policy and research.
