M

on and loved it from the beginning,"
Victoria said.
Since then, Louiza has collected
25 trophies and $1,000 in prize
money at chess tournaments. Louiza
hopes one day to become national
chess champion.
In April 1996, at age 5, Louiza
entered her first competitive tourna-
ment and became the Michigan state
kindergarten champion. A few
months later, she won second place
in the national kindergarten champi-
onship in Terre Haute, Ind.
Louiza's parents were beaming. "A
tiny 5-year-old with a pony tail
shocked us with her confident per-
formance," Victoria said.
After that victory, her parents
bought her a teddy bear that was
bigger than she was. Louiza buckled
him in the car next to her and spoke
to him the whole way home from
Terre Haute.
In 1997, Louiza repeated as
Michigan state champion in her age
group. Between 1998 and 2000,
Louiza won first prize at the
Chicago Open, the second largest
tournament in the United States,
and second place in Michigan's
Women's Chess Championship.
Last summer, Louiza was invited
to join the USA national team to
compete in the Youth World Chess
Championship. From Oct. 10-24,
Louiza joined her teammates and the
best young chess minds from all over

the world in Oropesa Del Mar,
Spain.
After playing against girls 10 and
under from five continents, Louiza
finished 26th out of 58.
In Spain, Victoria spoke with
other parents about sponsorships.
They explained how their children
were helped financially by their
communities.
The Livschitz family is seeking a
sponsor that will help Louiza to con-
tinue developing her talents. "We
hope the Jewish community will rec-
ognize Louiza's special abilities and
will help contribute to her success,"
Victoria said.
With two other children in the
family — Jennifer, 5, and Daniel, 14
months — it is financially difficult
for the Livschitzes to provide the
$28,000 training program Louiza
needs to accomplish her goals. The
costs include supplies, 10 yearly
tournaments, two special camps in
the summer led by chess profession-
als, two Pan American tournaments
per year and the youth world cham-
pionship.
"I really want to go back to Spain
next year," said Louiza, "and maybe
someday get first place."
