Rabbi Norman Roman's Torah por-
tion ("Lessons From Solomon, Joseph
Show Value Of Self-Denial," Dec. 29,
page 54) are appropriate given the sit-
uation of the two mothers, each
claiming that the newborn was hers.
King Solomon suggested that the
child be physically split because there
was no way of proving parenthood.
The real mother surrendered to the
imposter, for only when whole and
intact could the child have the chance
of growing up. King Solomon's sug-
gestion would have made two, but
equally dead portions.
Torah portions and Haftorah
lessons can be applied to other situa-
tions, especially current discussions
between Jews and Arabs as ro the
future of Israel. Can Solomon's wis-
dom be applied to the situation?
Clearly, ever since the 1967 war,
Israel officially offered to surrender its
conquest of the Judean-Samarian hills
to the Arabs. By refusing to annex the
West Bank, the Arab population was
left to its impulses and burgeoning
Arab nationalism resulted and, natu-
rally, prospered.
The West Bank remained as
"administered territories," and in real-
ity the "child" was officially split
between the two mothers.
Indeed, 2001 is seeing Israeli Prime
Minister Ehud Barak tentatively
accept Palestinian Authority leader
Yasser Arafat's beginning of Palestine's
future, with Jerusalem and beyond in
the wings. The "child" is being reunit-
ed.
Since 1948, Arabs of various states
have publicly insisted that Palestine
remain a unitary and singular state,
not divided, as is Israel. War, violent
or otherwise, would continue until
Palestine was united under Arab rule.
Arafat merely was their weapon.
In Arab psychology, the coming
Palestine is the real "mother" for it is
on the way to be whole. The land
becomes united and the infidel Jew
expelled. Witness what has happened
to Jews in "administered territories"
when under Arab control.
