be found in this wondrous country.
We have just returned from Israel.
Is it safe? we are asked. We wandered
about in cities late at night, something
we do not do here. We watched our
cousin equip her three sons, ages 8, 6
and 3, with headphones and set them
off alone through an exhibit in the
Israel Museum, something we would
never do here.
We traveled from city to city by
rental car. We used taxis intra-city for
convenience.
There is never going to be a time
when your visit to Israel will be more
appreciated. Cab drivers offered us
candy. Restaurants gave us free drinks.
People were so happy to see us that it
was humbling. In reality for the
majority of Israelis, unless they have a
child in the army, what is happening
in the territories is background noise
to their lives. People go to work, eat in
restaurants, visit museums, and enjoy
opera and concerts.
Stop watching CNN (Cable News
Network)! This is not Israel as you
know it. Israel is beautiful, vibrant,
fascinating.
Is it safe? As a Jew, I must answer a
question with a question: Can you
think of a safer place than the Federal
Building in Oklahoma City? Do you
get into a car? Do you travel in air-
planes?
Israel offers as safe a travel destina-
tion as any normal country in the
world. We love to go there and hope
others will share our passion for this
miracle in our generation.

ORT Also Aids
In Renaissance
Steven Weinstock does a wonderful
job of capturing the essence of the
miraculous Jewish renewal and regen-
eration happening in Kiev ("Kiev's
Jewish Renaissance," Jan. 5, page 6).
Many organizations are hard at
work to ensure that the renewal con-
tinues to build strength, among them
ORT. A major acceleration of Jewish
education and community life in the
former Soviet Union has been
launched with ORT's "Regeneration
2000" — a successfully completed,
multi-million dollar project to estab-
lish technological centers in eight
cities in Russia, Ukraine (including
Kiev), Moldova, Belarus and
Tatarstan. The centers will be located
in Jewish schools to upgrade technical,
academic, and Jewish education.
The goal is to attract large numbers
of Jewish youth to Jewish education
by combining Jewish studies with the
latest in computer and Internet pro-
grams.
By installing advanced technologies,
we immediately raise the schools'
quality of education and prestige,
making them more attractive to Jewish
students who otherwise would not
attend a Jewish school, reports Gideon
Meyer, deputy director general and
director of operations for World ORT.
For many of these youths, comput-
er technology and the Internet also -
provide them their first look at, and
contact with, the larger Jewish world.

Gift Of Life
Is Truly That
Thank you for your two-part cover
series about organ transplants ("Mirac-
ulous Mitzvot," Dec. 22, page 6 and
"Lifesaving Legacies," Dec. 29, page
6), at the end of December. Your writ-
ers and photographers should be very
proud of this effort.
Your readers may want to know
that age is no barrier to donation of
certain organs. I recently read of the
corneas from an elderly person's body
that restored sight to two people.
There are two common ways peo-
ple can express their intent to donate
organs when they die. One is to mark
the spot on your driver's license. The
other is to place your name on the
Michigan Organ and Tissue Donor
Registry, which would help communi-
cate your desires to your next of kin at
the time of death. Michigan readers
can do this online at
www.sos.state.mi.us
or by getting a card to mail in from
the Gift of Life Agency by calling
(800) 482-4881. Even if you take
both of those steps, you should also
tell your next of kin about your wishes
now.
Further information is available
from the Gift of Life Agency at the
phone number given above, or online
at
