Court To Hear
Pollard Case

Washington/JTA — A federal judge
in Washington planned to hear oral
arguments on whether attorneys for
convicted spy Jonathan Pollard should
have access to classified portions of
the court record.
The attorneys argue that those docu-
ments led to a life sentence, which they
are now appealing. A former U.S. Navy
intelligence analyst, Pollard was sen-
tenced in 1987 for spying for Israel.

Praises Clinton

New York/JTA — A Jewish environ-
mental group is praising President
Clinton's decision to protect more than
58 million acres of U.S. national forests
from future development.
"When Jews around the U.S. gather
soon to celebrate Tu b'Shevat, the
Jewish New Year of the Trees, we will
rejoice" as a result of Clinton's move,
which will prevent commercial logging
and oil and gas development on the
land. The statement came from Mark
Jacobs, president of the Coalition on
the Environment and Jewish Life.

New York/JTA — A U.S. report will say
the $500,000 that Washington author-
ized in 1963 for Holocaust restitution
may have been inadequate, according to
sources who have read the study.
President Clinton created the
Presidential Commission on Holocaust
Assets, whose report is expected soon, to
probe what became of assets that Nazi
victims sent to the United States for
safekeeping, and what became of stolen
assets that fell into U.S. Army hands at
the end of World War II.

New York/JTA — A U.S. appeals court
ruled against four Orthodox Jews suing
Yale University for allegedly violating
their religious beliefs.
The three-judge panel this week
upheld an earlier court decision reject-
ing the former students claims that Yale
violated their beliefs by requiring them
to live in coeducational dormitories.
