In Schools: Poll
New York/JTA — The No. 2 executive
at the United Jewish Communities is
apparently on her way out, 14 months
after being hired to implement change
in the U.S. federation world's umbrella
body.
The UJC is currently negotiating with
Louise Stoll about the terms of her
departure, according to sources close to
UJC. But UJC officials would say only
that they are discussing her future role.
New York/JTA — Americans are wary
of religion in the political arena, but
want more of it in public schools,
according to a poll released this week.
Religion is the best way to strengthen
moral behavior and family values, 69
percent of those polled said. The poll of
1,507 U.S. adults was conducted by
Public Agenda, a New York-based policy
research agency. The margin of error was
plus or minus 3 percent.
Israel Urges
Tourist Travel
Lieberman Quits
O.U. Board
Tel Aviv/JTA — Israel's Ministry of
Tourism announced a new advertising
campaign to reassure Americans about
the safety of traveling in Israel.
The $1.5 million campaign, which
will feature testimonials of travelers, will
appear in major metropolitan newspa-
pers and in Jewish and Christian news-
papers. The campaign comes on the
heels of a major tourism drop in Israel
following the eruption of violence last
fall. Since then, more than 50 percent of
tours to Israel were canceled, resulting in
$500 million in lost tourism revenue,
according to Uzi Gafni, deputy Israel
commissioner for tourism in North
America.
New York/JTA — Sen. Joseph
Lieberman resigned from the board of
the Orthodox Union.
The former vice-presidential candi-
date's press secretary said the move is
Dart of a larger effort by Lieberman to
"limit outside affiliations.

Boycott Boy Scouts,
Reform Leaders Say
New York/JTA — Reform Jewish leaders
in the United States recommended that
parents withdraw their children from
Boy Scout chapters and that synagogues
end their sponsorship of Scout troops.
The recommendation by the Reform
movement's Joint Commission on Social
Action, made in a Jan. 5 letter to con-
gregations, is believed to be the strongest
reaction yet to a U.S. Supreme Court
decision last June allowing the Boy
Scouts to exclude homosexuals. The Boy
Scouts' stance on homosexuals is
"incompatible with our consistent belief
that every individual regardless of his or
her sexual orientation is created in the
image of God and is deserving of equal
treatment," the letter said.
Father Of Slain Son

Jerusalem/JTA — The father of an
Israeli soldier kidnapped and murdered
by Palestinian terrorists more than six
years ago was hurt during a robbery of
his home.
Israel Radio reported that three
masked intruders on Tuesday bound and
beat Yehuda Waxman, father of
Corporal Nachshon Waxman, before
fleeing with money.
