folks might have chosen the iguana
dinner ... if three days' notice was
given ... If iguana didn't fit the mood,
suggestions were made to try the
stuffed diamond back rattlesnake,
breast of crow or monkey with fingers.
For an exotic dessert, a recommen-
dation was chocolate covered bees.
A BIG FAVORITE was Huck's
Redford Inn ... located on Grand
River near Seven Mile Road ... con-
sidered then as a roadhouse, out in
the country ... where people liked
driving to on a pleasant Sunday after-
noon.
When the Huck family originally
took over Redford Inn ... for years it
had been known as a club for thirsty
gamblers through the '20s and '30s ...
they brought with them a wealth of
experience in the restaurant business.
Emil, Emil Jr. and another son,
Harold, had been operators of the
Westwood Inn ... The Westwood was
a stopping-off place for musical
groups like Tommy Dorsey, Jimmy
Dorsey, Glenn Miller and Benny
Goodman ... back in the days when
big bands were in vogue.
One of the unique things about the
Westwood was the good food ... Most
places of that ilk were not noted for
tasty viands.
The food at Redford Inn was of the -
same high quality that established it
early as one of northwest Detroit's
most popular and profitable restau-
rants.
There were good entrees on the
menu, but it was the roadhouse din-
ners that built and maintained the
Huck reputation.
THE WINERY on Park Avenue in
Detroit was the only place around
with wine on tap ... But this isn't why
so many people went to the place ... A
lot of note was gained from its pizza
Salsicca ... a Chicago-style deep dish
folks couldn't get anywhere else at the
time.
TRADER VIC'S in the Detroit
Hilton Hotel on Washington
Boulevard was a best bet for
Polynesian dining in Detroit ... with a
hamburger people never stopped talk-
ing about ... It was a chopped sirloin
Hawaiian ... with fried banana slices
and fried pineapple slices.
DAY GAL SERVERS at Northgate
Delicatessen-Restaurant on Greenfield
in Oak Park, Pat Layton and Lottie
Zawol, became weight-watcher
experts along with owner Dick
Lichtman ... But not for themselves ...
All took courses so they could answer
calorie count questions asked by the
customers.
