JEWISH NEWS

radio and television
personalities.
PLUMP, PINK-
SKINNED, white-
haired Frank Raiti,
original senior part-
ner and general
manager of Paradise
Cafe, on Woodward
north of Six Mile, was a one-time
vintner who came to the United
States to make his fortune and lost his
shirt ... not once but a couple of
times.
In a delightful Italian accent, Frank
used to tell how he came to this coun-
try in 1923 looking for gold in the
streets ... Unaware that the Volstead
Act was in force, Frank pursued his
old-country trade here in Detroit for
a number of years until he had a tidy
nest egg built up ... Then he returned
to Italy.
With the small capital he had
amassed, Frank opened wine shops in
Milan and .Napoli ... He prospered
until the '29 crash reached the conti-
nent ... Frank was broke again and
out of business.
Back to the promised land he came
in 1930 and once again Frank kept
body and soul together pursuing his
old-world trade.
In spite of his meager knowledge of
English and scant familiarity with the
law, Frank was soon doing very well
... When repeal of the Volstead came,
Frank opened Paradiso in 193.7 right
un-, it
on the very spot where, ye2
was owned by Marcella _._id
--
Moody.
By 1940, Frank had acquired a cou-
ple of partners, addecl another in
1946, and for years Paradiso flour-
ished.
With Frank at the helm, ably assist-
ed by partners Pete Fracchia and Cam
Cracchiolo, who did the cooking, the
accent at Paradiso was very Italian
...in a large, sprawling place with four
or five separate dining rooms ... to
where a fourth partner, Paul Manos,
would seat people as its maitre d.
THE A-Z SAFARI LAND on
Conners in Detroit featured wild-
game dinners ... like broiled boa con-
strictor, African lion steaks and alliga-
tor tails.
The pantry shelf was full of goodies
from the African veldt, but, even
though the preparation was excellent,
it was not recommended for the timid
... There was an American menu for
the faint-hearted.
For the adventurous, a good dinner -
might have started out with fresh baby
bees in drawn butter ... For the entree,
