for those great deli men who knew right
from wrong.
The corned beef at Stage is good but
the pickles put on tables should be
firmer instead of old and soft ... At
Lindy's it was bad ... And Bagelmania's
was just fair.
Who said that Benjamin "Bugsy"
Siegel's Flamingo connection would be
phased out? ... And that there would be
no more reminders of him in the hotel?
"Bugsy's" unflattering picture is still on
posters and casino chips ... And there is
Bugsy's Casino Lounge, Bugsy's Bar,
Bugsy's Video Poker Parlor and Bugsy's
Bagels.
I went to see "Skintight" at the
Harrah's Showroom with George Toule,
Caesars Palace casino supervisor; Ricardo
Rose, choreographer and dancer; and ex-
Detroiter Leah Marks ... The very talent-
ed dancers put on a most entertaining
performance in a show of fast-moving
proportions ... High energy by the
dancers is very well received.
To the Garden Cafe at Harrah's and
something I had to look at twice and
taste to believe ... A fat-free chocolate
Devil's Food Cake sundae ... It was deli-
cious ($4.99).
The days of the bevy of great enter-
tainers who used to play the Las Vegas
Strip has been replaced in most part by
huge extravaganzas ... Those like Wayne
Newton are still there ... And excellent
magicians like Lance Burton, with the
showroom named after him at Monte
Carlo; and Steve Wyrick at the Sahara,
have long-term contracts ... Paying $95
per person to see Siegfried & Roy at the
Mirage is a shocker, no matter how good
they are.
Just about everybody who was any-
body played Las Vegas ... Bob Hope,
Shecky Greene, Judy Garland, Liza
Minnelli, Elvis Presley, Rich Little,
Debbie Reynolds, Ann-Margaret,
George Burns, Liberace, Sophie Tucker,
Andy Williams, Red Skelton, Milton
Berle, Sid Caeser, etc. etc. etc.
Jerry Lewis has a 20-year contract
with the Orleans to play its showroom
five times a year ... Paul Anka, Don
Rickles, Ray Charles, Tom Jones and
many more still come to perform.
But show biz extravaganzas seem to
have taken over ... Like the wonderful
Cirque Du Soleil troupe that opened in
1998 in Bellagio's "0" (eau) Room at
the opening of the 1.6 billion dollar
hotel-casino ... or Cirque's Novelle
Adventure at the Mirage ... or its
Mysterie at Treasure Island ... or the
Follies Bergere that Lou Walters,
Barbara's dad, brought to the Tropicana
from Paris in 1959 ... and is still playing
Las Vegas.
